The banana is the most boring-seeming fruit in your kitchen and one of the strangest objects in the entire produce aisle. It has no seeds, it is technically a berry, it is a clone of billions of identical plants, and the version your grandparents ate was a different variety that a fungus wiped out. For something that costs less than most single vegetables, the banana hides an unusual amount of story.

Start with two facts that annoy people at parties. First, a banana is a berry in the botanical sense: it develops from a single flower with one ovary and has a soft fleshy body with the seeds embedded inside. Strawberries and raspberries, despite the name, are not berries. Bananas are. Botany does not care about your intuitions.
Second, the banana plant is not a tree. It has no wood. That tall "trunk" is a tightly packed column of leaf bases called a pseudostem, and the whole thing is a herbaceous plant, the largest flowering herb on Earth. After a plant fruits once, that pseudostem dies and a new shoot grows from the underground rhizome. So a banana plantation is not an orchard so much as a field of enormous, fruit-bearing herbs.
Look at the little brown specks down the center of a banana. Those are the ghosts of seeds. Wild bananas are full of hard, bean-sized seeds that make the fruit nearly inedible; there is barely any flesh between them. The banana you eat is a domesticated variety bred to be seedless, and seedless means sterile. It cannot reproduce on its own.
So how do we get more? Every commercial banana plant is grown from a cutting or shoot of an existing plant, which makes it a clone. When you eat a Cavendish banana in Chicago and someone eats one in Berlin, those two fruits are genetically identical, copies of copies stretching back to a single ancestral plant. Here is the fact that genuinely surprises people. Until the mid-twentieth century, the dominant export banana was a variety called Gros Michel, reportedly sweeter and creamier than what we have now. In the 1950s a soil fungus called Panama disease, a strain of Fusarium wilt, tore through Gros Michel plantations. Because every plant was a clone, none had resistance, and the variety collapsed commercially across the globe.
The industry survived by switching to the Cavendish, a variety that happened to resist that strain of the fungus. Every "regular" banana you have eaten in your life is almost certainly a Cavendish. It is arguably why artificial banana flavoring tastes "wrong" to us: that flavor compound was calibrated to Gros Michel, and some people insist it is a taste of the banana we lost.
The uncomfortable sequel: a new strain of Panama disease, Tropical Race 4, attacks the Cavendish, and it has been spreading through Asia, Australia, Africa, and, since 2019, into Latin America. Because the Cavendish is once again a global monoculture of identical clones, the same vulnerability applies. Researchers are racing to breed or engineer resistant bananas, and you can read the ongoing scientific story even as the fungus keeps moving. Nobody thinks bananas will vanish from shelves next year, but the long-term supply of the specific fruit you know is a real open question.
